How to Visualize for Top Climbing PerformanceHarness the Power of Positive Thinking to Achieve Maximum Results
Top climbing performance isn't all about physical rock climbing ability. Visualization is a key to training for climbing. Learn how to visualize, and improve at climbing.
While physical training for climbing is definitely a crucial component of improving rock climbing performance, mental training is every bit as important. Training the mind should be a part of every rock climber's training program. One of the easiest ways to achieve maximum results involves harnessing the power of positive thinking by learning how to visualize. The Proven Power of Brain TrainingFor literally thousands of years, great thinkers have stressed the power of positive thinking. For example, Buddha’s twin verses begin by stating, “All that we are is the result of what we have thought. We are formed and molded by our thoughts.” More recently, scientific studies have proven that athletes who visualize experience maximum results more often than those who do not. Use Mental Training to Improve Rock ClimbingEvery rock climber (and other athlete), then, should be incorporating training the mind into training for climbing. By learning how to visualize, the rock climber can improve at climbing without making any physical improvements. Simply taking the time to employ positive thinking can result in an increase in climbing performance virtually overnight. How to Visualize and Achieve Maximum ResultsLearning how to visualize is simple. When at home during the week, set aside at least 10 minutes of quiet, alone time every day, if possible. With eyes closed, think of a boulder problem or rock climbing route that is currently in play. From ground to top, imagine each specific movement in full detail, as if actually climbing the problem or route. Picture the joy and exhilaration of finishing the route or problem. Repeat this exercise daily, going over specific, difficult sequences multiple times if known (in the case of a project), or else picturing the general feeling of success if the route or problem (or climbing competition) involves unknown climbing terrain. Draw upon the use of positive affirmations, mantras, or both, to help keep the mind focused while practicing visualization. Also, visualizing climbing while walking or jogging can sometimes be effective. Just before stepping onto the rock climbing route, boulder problem, or out into the competition scene, do a quick visualization of the desired results, using vivid imagery while breathing deeply. Then, relax and let go of the outcome. Allow the body to do what the mind has prepared it for. Focus solely on the task directly at hand, using mantras and affirmations to keep the mind from straying to extraneous concerns. Training the Mind Will Improve Climbing PerformanceScientific evidence and years of human wisdom prove that the power of positive thinking, and more specifically, learning how to visualize, will improve climbing performance. Learning how to visualize is one of the most important and valuable aspects of mental training for rock climbing. Achieve maximum results as a rock climber by embracing brain training as key component of training for climbing.
